Jack Daniel’s Waste

I toured the Jack Daniels Distillery with my family when I was young. Even though I was not of drinking age it was a fun experience.

But the thing that stuck out to me the most was an off-handed comment from the guide as we left one building and walked past a heap of mash before entering another building. (Mash is the mixture of grains and water that is the foundation of the distilling process.)

The guide called our attention to the pile of mash and mentioned it made terrific cattle feed.

And for some reason that stuck with me. Jack Daniels produced whiskey and sold their “waste” to another business.
